Alyssa Healy has been genuinely surprised by the enthusiastic response to her commentary work, indicating that a future in media seems to be a promising path for this retiring Australian cricket star. As she prepares to conclude her impressive 15-year career, Healy chose to remain discreet about her plans during a press conference announcing her retirement.
Despite her reticence, it appears that a transition into broadcasting is almost certain, especially given the accolades she received from fans for her insightful commentary during the Ashes series aired on Fox Sports this summer.
Healy’s last on-field appearance is scheduled to be the only Test match against India, taking place from March 6-9 in Perth, as part of a multi-format home series.
Her husband, fellow cricketer Mitchell Starc, noted that Healy was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reception of her media contributions this summer. "Whether she admits it or not, I think she’s truly skilled at it," Starc remarked on Wednesday. "She definitely enjoys the experience, and she has a great team around her to collaborate with.
"She’s been quite taken aback by the positive feedback, which has been somewhat beyond what she expected. It’s unclear if she intends to pursue this path more vigorously in the future, but she certainly relished the opportunity to commentate on three Test matches this season. Given her passion for cricket and her extensive viewing experience, it’s clear she excels in this area."
In addition to her burgeoning media career, Healy has previously expressed aspirations of starting a family post-retirement. Alongside prominent players like Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry, the 35-year-old has been a pivotal figure in elevating Australia's women's cricket to unprecedented levels.
Healy's remarkable achievements include being named the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year on two separate occasions, amassing over 7,000 runs in international play, and achieving 275 dismissals as a wicketkeeper.
Starc also highlighted Healy's evolution as a player since she took over as captain from Lanning in 2023. "She has an impressive understanding of the game, possibly even more than I do, especially now that she’s captain," he said. "She’s become more attuned to the intricacies of cricket, showing a shift in focus since assuming the captaincy. She has prioritized the team’s success over her personal ambitions and remains driven to help the team realize its full potential. Her determination to defeat India and end her career on a high note is evident."
