Toronto's long-awaited transit project is finally here! The Eglinton Crosstown LRT, a decade in the making, is set to open its doors to the public this Sunday, offering free rides on its inaugural day.
But there's a catch to this exciting news. The CEO of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), Mandeep Lali, announced a phased opening strategy during the board meeting on Tuesday. This means Line 5, as it will be known, will start with reduced hours and a gradual rollout of services.
Lali explained, "We're taking a cautious approach to ensure a smooth launch. This allows us to fine-tune the system and address any issues as we go." But here's where it gets controversial: the phased opening is a direct response to the challenges faced by Line 6.
The Crosstown line boasts 25 stops, stretching from Mount Dennis to Kennedy Station, with over half of the stops underground. However, the remaining 11 stops are above ground, potentially causing delays due to traffic lights, a problem Line 6 has struggled with. Transit Signal Priority (TSP) is set to be activated to address this, but will it be enough?
The project's journey has been a bumpy one, with construction starting in 2011 and multiple delays pushing back the opening date from 2020. And this is the part most people miss: the delays have raised concerns about the project's management.
The TTC is also making changes to 35 bus routes, 16 of which were already implemented in the fall. Additionally, a notable change for customers is the shift to paying on surface platforms rather than on vehicles.
While the official announcement is exciting, transit advocacy group TTC Riders worries about potential reliability issues. They urge the TTC to learn from past mistakes, stating, "Riders deserve a seamless experience." This raises the question: is a phased opening the best approach, or should the TTC aim for a full launch from the start?
