Imagine being the president of the UFC, what changes would you make? Well, mixed martial arts enthusiasts recently had their say, and boy, did they have some ideas! From improving fighter pay to introducing new rules, the community wants to see the UFC evolve. Even those within the organization, like the lead commentator, have their own suggestions.
The Debate: UFC Roster Purge for a Better Experience?
Jon Anik, the UFC's long-standing play-by-play commentator, has an intriguing take on how to enhance the UFC experience. He believes that UFC events are too long and could benefit from being a few hours shorter. Anik proposes a bold move: reducing the number of fights per card to 10 and cutting 150 fighters from the roster.
"Our events are way too long," Anik stated during a recent interview. "I'd be happy with 10 or 11 fights instead of 15. Even if we trimmed it down to five or six hours instead of eight, that would be a welcome change. We're asking a lot of our fans, especially when you consider the number of events we host each year."
Anik's proposal is a controversial one. He acknowledges that it might be seen as selfish, given his role as a broadcaster, but he believes it's necessary to create a more digestible and enjoyable sporting event.
"We have a massive roster, and we're constantly signing new fighters. If I had the power, I'd cut 150 fighters and focus on creating a more streamlined and engaging experience for our fans."
But here's where it gets interesting... Anik will be back in action on January 24th, leading the UFC 324 broadcast on Paramount+. This marks the beginning of a new era for the UFC, and Anik will be joined by a new face, CBS presenter Kate Scott, who will serve as the desk anchor.
So, what do you think? Is Anik's proposal a step in the right direction, or does it raise concerns? Join the discussion and share your thoughts!
