LIV Golf's Thomas Detry: Why I Left the PGA Tour (2026)

LIV Golf's newest signing: Why I quit the PGA Tour

Thomas Detry, the highest-ranked player to join LIV Golf in two years, made a surprising decision to leave the PGA Tour after securing his first win. But why did the Belgian cross the divide?

He's arguably the biggest name to jump ship since Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton two years ago. Detry had just finished his standout season, becoming the first Belgian in history to win on the PGA Tour with a dominant victory at the WM Phoenix Open.

He collected $3.6 million in prize money and finished 44th in the FedEx Cup standings, securing his spot in the circuit's lucrative Signature Events for the 2026 season and beyond. So, what led Thomas Detry to join LIV Golf?

"It was one of the toughest decisions I ever had to make," the 33-year-old revealed during the league's preview week in Florida. Detry's decision was influenced by a phone call with Thomas Pieters, a close childhood friend and former University of Illinois teammate.

"I was about to head over to the US and get ready for the season," Detry explained. "I was in a comfortable situation on the PGA Tour with a two-year exemption and good performance. But Thomas's call sparked an idea. He mentioned a potential spot available, and I hadn't considered it before, but it lingered in my mind."

Detry sought a formal offer, and Pieters advised him to make a "smart business decision." Pieters, seeing a potential interest in Detry, wanted him to explore LIV Golf. "You don't hurt anyone by listening to their pitch," he said, and Detry liked what he heard.

Detry's decision was influenced by his family, two kids, and the financial benefits. He and his wife, who have been living a nomadic life, felt LIV Golf could offer a better lifestyle. The team aspect, with Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed, was also appealing.

"The idea of not defending the Phoenix was sad," Detry admitted, referring to his biggest win. "But there are other positives, like team events and being more at home."

Detry joins 4Aces, replacing Harold Varner III, and will play in the DP World Tour, including the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, close to home.

However, his decision comes with a price. As a LIV Golf member, Detry must pay fines to remain eligible on the PGA Tour. Rahm's $3 million in fines is a precedent, and Detry acknowledges the surreal situation.

"I had conversations with DP World Tour executives," he said. "I believe changes are needed, and I support the tour. I love playing in Europe and will play as much as possible."

Detry's emotional victory in Phoenix last year, ending years of self-doubt, fueled his desire for more wins in both tours. He's excited to confirm his success and win in Europe and the US.

"Every aspect of my golfing journey has been positive," he said. "Winning was a significant milestone, and I'm eager to continue my success."

The controversy surrounding LIV Golf continues, with players like Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia's reactions adding to the debate.
