The biggest offseason additions, one for each division
The baseball season is almost upon us, and with it, the excitement of Spring Training. As the MLB gears up for the 2026 season, we're taking a closer look at the biggest offseason additions in each division, with a focus on the players who could make a substantial impact from the get-go.
American League East:
The Orioles made a bold move by signing Pete Alonso, a veteran power hitter who can support their young hitters. While his defense may be questioned, Alonso's ability to hit home runs and be a force for the lineup makes him a valuable addition. The Orioles need to win in 2026 to reverse their two-year slide and restore faith in their fans.
American League Central:
The Tigers made a significant move by signing Framber Valdez, the last top-shelf starting pitcher available. Despite the high cost, Valdez and Tarik Skubal form a formidable one-two punch in the rotation. The Tigers' decision to keep the best pitcher in the AL and add a top free-agent pitcher makes them the clear favorites in the division.
American League West:
The Mariners added Brendan Donovan, a left-handed hitter who gets on base and can play anywhere on defense. Donovan's ability to grind out at-bats and support power hitters like Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez makes him a perfect fit for the Mariners' strategy of building on their 2025 success.
National League East:
The Mets made a strategic shift after the Dodgers signed Kyle Tucker. They pivoted to sign Bo Bichette, an infielder who can slide into Alonso's place in the lineup. The Mets also acquired Luis Robert Jr. and Freddy Peralta to strengthen their outfield and rotation, respectively. This series of moves has positioned the Mets as a strong contender in the division.
National League Central:
The Cubs signed Alex Bregman, a beloved player who brings on-base percentage and right-handed power. Bregman's steady influence and steady infield partnership with Dansby Swanson make him a fan favorite in Wrigley. The Cubs' addition of Bregman is a significant move to improve their chances in the division.
National League West:
The Dodgers' signing of Kyle Tucker was a strategic move to improve their outfield, which produced in the bottom half of baseball last year. Tucker's ability to lock down right field without being the showcase star makes him a valuable addition to the team's success.
