Prepare to be amazed as we delve into a design story that challenges the typical Alpine aesthetic! In the picturesque town of Gstaad, Switzerland, a unique chalet stands out, defying the expected 'Alpine chic' stereotype. Antje Hruby, the visionary behind Hruby Studio, took on the task of redesigning a four-bedroom home, aiming to create something truly special while adhering to the town's strict building regulations.
Hruby explains, "The old house lacked any significant features, giving us the freedom to reorient the chalet and maximize the breathtaking views and natural light." Working alongside Fend & Partner architects, she carefully planned the architecture, windows, and interior layout to capture the stunning panorama of the valley.
But here's where it gets interesting: Hruby wanted the interiors to reflect the traditional Gstaad exterior, creating a cohesive and authentic Alpine feel. She chose earthy tones and materials that would age beautifully, embracing the idea of patina as a desirable feature, much like the charming weathered wood of nearby farmhouses.
"Stone, wood, and textiles were carefully selected to echo the local topography and atmosphere," Hruby adds. The extensive wood panelling pays homage to Swiss craftsmanship, while a unique hand-carved stone basin in the guest bathroom mirrors the majestic mountains outside.
The heart of the chalet is an open-plan kitchen and dining area, a space that truly embodies the couple's lifestyle. "It's a convivial zone where cooking and dining blend seamlessly, offering a versatile space for lively gatherings or peaceful retreats," Hruby describes. Here, privacy and communication coexist harmoniously.
One of the standout features is the double-sided glass vitrines between the kitchen and dining room. These clever partitions maintain visual connection with the landscape, even when closed, and provide a separate, private space for staff during larger gatherings, without compromising the overall sense of openness.
And this is the part most people miss: Hruby's attention to detail extends even to the elevator! Faced with standard elevator options and strict fire safety rules, she transformed it into a unique 'cabin' with velvet wall coverings, creating a cozy and inviting space.
The elevator's presence also influenced the staircase design, as the available space was limited. Hruby's solution was a finely crafted metal balustrade, a fluid ribbon running from top to bottom, adding a sense of refinement and generosity to the transitional space.
"Generosity in transitional spaces is what truly defines a home's character," she explains. "Entrance halls, corridors, and doors shape a home's atmosphere more than any single living room could."
To complete the interior, Hruby introduced vintage pieces, adding instant character and emotional depth to the rooms. A painting by Philippe Decrauzat hangs above the fireplace, while a green sofa by Sedilia London curves gracefully around a low table by Axel Vervoodt in the living room. A bold red Cobra table lamp by Martinelli Luce adds a pop of color to a built-in desk on the upper level.
"What sets this chalet apart is the seamless blend of contemporary design and local tradition," Hruby says. "It has a unique, personal character, a true reflection of the owners' trust and the exceptional craftsmanship of all involved."
